My name is Cindy Dallow and I’m a Registered Dietitian with 30 years of experience helping people change their eating habits and their relationship with food.
I’m also a former chronic dieter and can relate to some of the craziness that you might be experiencing. I learned about Intuitive Eating and it changed everything. I now eat what I want, when I want it, and I provide my body with the nutrition and movement that it needs to be healthy.
I’m also a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and I love teaching others about this very freeing and nurturing way of eating.
Lastly, I’m an endurance athlete and have completed numerous marathons and triathlons. I’ve always loved running and biking so it’s not a surprise I ended up doing triathlons (except that I didn’t learn to swim until I was 45 so they haven’t come easy). I don’t win races but I love training and the feeling of accomplishing a goal. Endurance sports are not for everyone, but regular physical activity is the best health insurance you can find.
My beliefs and philosophy about dieting and weight loss:
I worked as a clinical dietitian for many years and also provided outpatient nutrition counseling, most of which was helping people to lose weight. Almost everyone I worked with lost weight….but they also gained it back quickly!
I became frustrated with the revolving door to my office (and knew that it was the same for other dietitians) so I headed back to grad school to get my doctorate at Colorado State University. Along the way, I became acquainted with other health professionals who were also tired of handing out weight loss diets only to see people lose and regain weight over and over again.
There had to be a better way to help people improve their health other than weight loss. Not that weight loss is a bad thing; weight loss can be a good thing BUT because it’s so difficult to maintain a weight loss, it might be best to focus on other outcomes and let the weight fall wherever it will naturally fall.
Those outcomes include cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), which happens to be one of the strongest predictors of longevity around. Many studies have shown CRF to be a better predictor of early mortality (from heart disease) than hypertension, high blood cholesterol, and obesity. In other words, it’s better to be fit and fat, than unfit and skinny!
You can read more about “fit and fat” here. Again, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to lose weight. But you need to be aware of the low success rate of maintaining a weight loss before embarking on any given diet. If you’re willing to take that risk, go for it.
